Yesterday Charles and I drove to the Police Range where we are members to look at pistols and to see if they have re-opened the rifle range yet. Under “remodel”. Lead mitigation or mining of berms. Because the Seattle Police use Glocks they also are a distributor of them. The guys that work there know me well from coming to the rifle range and that pistols are a new thing for me. (By the way, the Seattle Police Range is the BEST! The guys down there are awesome.) I do want to get in to pistol competitions. They said to come back tomorrow, which is now today, and they would loan me the 9mm. He knew we have a 45 caliber 1911 already. But that gun kicks my butt. It is fun though.

So today they loaned me a Glock 19 9mm and he showed me his personal one which is a Glock 34. This is about 1/2 inch or so longer. I think this one with the longer sight radius would be better for competition. But off I went with my 19. I also brought out my 45 to feel the difference next to each other. And what a difference there is! Hardly any recoil. Then I use the 45 and in comparison it nearly knocks me over. Well, not really, but you get it. The only problem though was that my groups with the 9mm were down and to the left. Turns out the gun has never been sighted in. Whew! I am new but not that bad of a shot.  At least my groups in that corner were small. Another shooter came over and asked if I wanted to try his Glock 10mm. I really liked his. Sights were correct and trigger must have been replaced. Very smooth and accurate gun. He also had the biggest pistol I had ever seen. Dirty Harry had nothing on this guy. Of course a 50 cal. That thing did knock you over. So cool though. Am I ready to make a decision? No.

I have to try a few others. Our pistol competitor friends say they all use a 40 cal for the matches. Sometimes the 9mm might not make the shots? I am sure like with rifles, everyone has their own view on what is best. Regardless, also like with the rifles, once you do get a pistol, you will want to trick it out with custom triggers, grips, etc. So then does it really matter what I buy? Yea, I know, it does. Well, I am having fun trying all of these on for size. The best part is, the guys at the range knowing I am a competitive shooter have offered their training services in pistol. I will gladly take them up on it.
