Way back in January at Shot Show I met John Paul in person in his vendor booth. I had emailed him ahead of time with an introduction that I wanted to shoot one of his rifles for my new 3 Gun adventure. JP rifles were on my Christmas wish list last December. To see a selection of rifles they make in person was impressive. I also was drooling over what I called his “sniper” long range rifles. Perhaps when I am rich and famous I can get one of those. Okay, just rich. I followed up with him after the show and we discussed all of the custom details I wanted.
I figured this was a one time opportunity to get the
best of everything and have the coolest rifle out in the field. Well at least I think so.
If you have been to the range or especially a match you will notice that all of the rifles on the rack are black. Black, black and black. I wanted to stand out. I ordered the SCR-11 Rifle in .223. I went for the premium grade finish on the lower. A shiny silver metal. I had them engrave my 30calgal logo on the mag well. I have the side charging handle. Very awesome feature. Mag well has an exaggerated bevel. The compensator makes for no recoil. But don’t stand too close to me when I am firing. It is loud!! The only feature I can see right now that I may not like is the ambi safety. It is rubbing against my right trigger finger. Not sure if when firing that will be exaggerated. I will find out. Another feature that is practical yet oh so stylish is the JP Thermal Dissipator under the hand guard that is a bright shiny red. I had no idea this increased the barrel surface area over 700%? It keeps barrel temp down under continuous fire and supposedly increases barrel life span. I just think it looks cool. Let’s hope it does not heat up hand guard too much in a match with lots of rounds. Now I just need sights.
Last year at a long range match I won a $1200 certificate toward a US Optics scope. Again at shot show I went ahead and ordered one for 3 Gun and it still has not been finished. They have a huge back-order. Good problem for them. Sad for me. I was hoping to use this rifle at Boomershoot this coming weekend for the short range Intensive Match they will have. But I need sights! So Charles was kind enough to take off the scope from his rifle and let me borrow it for this. We went to the range last Saturday with Shelley Rae to practice spotting and sighting in long range rifle at 300, 500 and 600 yards. While there of course I brought out the JP and sighted it in at 200 yards. Wow! That gun has zero recoil. And off the bench the shots were on top of each other. Accurate as all get out. But Shelley and Charles ran away because they were too close along side of me. Loud! Now I just wish we had a tactical rifle or 3 Gun match in the near future. I have to wait until June at Ironman. That is okay. I get to show it off this weekend.
I need a name for my rifle. I had a couple of suggestions. “Lady in Red”, Xenia Onotop and Xena Princess Warrior. Charles says I should call it Dork McDork Dork. You think he might be just a little jealous?
