The SanTan Tactical lower with a Stag Arms upper and Lantac Dragon brake

The SanTan Tactical lower with a Stag Arms upper and Lantac Dragon brake

With all of the AR manufacturers out there these days it is getting difficult to find one that stands out from the crowd. I have found one that does. I met the guys from SanTan Tactical at Show Show this year. They contacted me before the show to meet up to show me their new lowers. They offered to send me one to test and I was half kidding when I asked if they could make it in a “pewter” color. Not only did they do that but the serial number is custom for 30calgal. Yes, I am spoiled. I guess that means I get to keep it!  The color is not pewter of course but it was coated by Robar with an NP3 Plus finish. It is sort of an “electroless” nickel with Teflon added in to the process. I will say it is pretty cool. Awesome color aside, San Tan Tactical truly has a unique product here.

San Tan does not have an upper yet so I paired it with my husband’s Stag Arms upper and accessories. The bummer part for me is that he got to

match yet. Perhaps I should not have matched it with his stuff because I may never see my lower again. He took it to a local 3 Gun match last weekend and the entire squad oohed and ahhd over it. And yes he said it shot great. What makes this lower different? Their “Purple Cow” (a Seth

Godin term) is that this rifle is truly ambidextrous. Not just sort of but truly.

Not so surprising is that the lower is formed of billet 7075-T651 aerospace grade aluminum. As for the ambi features, you have right and left handed mag release and bolt release. No matter your position you can change mags or clear malfunctions with either hand. This lower was really created for the leftie in mind first but to make the “rightie” feel at home as well. To brag about the quality, the bolt batch and release arm as well as the magazine catch and release arm are made from A-2 Tool Steel. The same material a bolt carrier is made from. Two things I love are “built in”

features. They are the funneled mag well and the ambidextrous quick attach \detach sling swivel points with anti-rotation stops every 45 degrees. You can see this detail in photo. The surfaces of all of the control buttons are textured which is great if wearing gloves or better yet shooting a match in the rainy NW where I am from. A very clever feature is the “ready” finger rest on the underside of the mag release. And the selector switch is at a 45 degree angle. There is the detail of the American flag engraved next to the mag release button. The trigger guard is built-in and enlarged. Not everyone cares about the look of their lower. But in the sporting groups it is nice to stand out. There are many great details to the SanTan lower that are extremely practical yet look really great too. I think it looks awesome. Especially mine. More reviews to come as I get to take it out to the range more.

I agree that the Santan STT-15 is an extremely high quality, thoughtful, hunk 7075 however… for those of us living in Kalifornia the ambidextrous controls make it impossible to install the new bullet button or AR MagLock to avoid having to build as a featureless rifle or, God forbide, have to register it as an assault weapon. If anyone knows of a product that would work please let me know.
