I blame it on Charles. (That is myself and Charles in photo to right.) Charles, my husband, brought me to the police range one day 6 years ago and I fired about 20 rounds from his Ar15 from the bench. He asked if I wanted to go to a competition. It was called an Across The Course match. Offhand, rapid seated, rapid prone and slow prone. 200 – 600 yards. “Sure why not” I said.

The very next weekend we went to the Paul Bunyan range in Puyallup, WA. He took me to the Wa St. Championships! For my first time? It was very early in the morning for a Saturday and there were lots of men in military uniforms. In fact it was all men! Talk about intimidating! No one seemed to smile. All so serious! Little did I know. I finally scoped out one other woman. 75 people. 2 of us women. And I am not exactly a wall flower.

I am 6ft tall, very slim and according to Charles, “hot”. It was in June and a rare warm sunny day in Seattle so I assumed shorts would be appropriate attire. THe only thing he did suggest was strong shoes like hiking shoes. So I had on boots, shorts (shorter than neccessary) and a tee. Our first part of the match was offhand. Not an easy task. Especially in this environment. Nerves were at full speed. There is a heavy, leather shooting jacket Charles hands me to strap myself in to. First off, it was his so it was too big. When I finally had it on and all strapped in I got in to position and when ordered started firing. A few rounds in to it I felt I was being watched. I had a bit of an audience. Charles was smirking. I looked down. The bottom of my shooting jacket came exactly to the bottom of my shorts. It looked as though I had nothing on except jacket and boots!

To this day I am teased about that. That was 6 years ago. I was hooked on this sport immediately. It has changed my life.
